ChrysoberylChrysoberyl gemstone

Mohs scale hardness: 8.5

Chrysoberyl is composed of beryllium aluminium oxide. The name chrysoberyl comes from the Greek which means “gold-colored beryl” but in fact chrysoberyl and beryl are two completely different gemstones. In terms of hardness, chrysoberyl is much more harder than beryl. Although both minerals contain element glucinum (berllium) but chrysoberyl has no silica in its composition, as has beryl. Chrysoberyl composed of glucina and alumina, the perentages being alumina 80.2, glucina 19.8. however, some other oxides might be present as impurities or replacing the alumina (iron and chromium oxides for example).

Chrysoberyl Properties

Chrysoberyl has a prismatic cleavage and conchoidal fracture. The mineral is infusible and is not attacked by acids. Its luster is vitreous, tending to oily, and is brilliant. Chrysoberyl is usually yellow-green, brownish or yellow with its color being caused by the presence of iron. The strong band will usually be revealed by spectroscopic analysis, where the violet takes over from the blue. When the color darkens from bright yelowish-green to golden-yelow to brown, this band increases in strength. Two additional bands can be seen in the green-blue if the stone has a strong color. Liquid-filled cavities containing three-phase inclusions are the most common inclusions. Stepped twin planes may be apparent in some cases.

An interesting feature of its crystals are the cyclic twins called trilling. Thise twinned crystals have a hexagonal apearance, but are the resullt of a triplet of twins witth each “twin” taking up 120 degrees of the cyclic trilling. Chrysoberyl is the third hardest natural gemstone and lies between corundum and topaz on Mohs hardness scale. Chrysoberyl was first described and named by Abraham Gottlob Werner (a famous German geologist) in 1790, a year after it was discovered.

There are three main gem varieties of chrysoberyl and they each offer a different type of beauty:

  • The first one is the ordinary yellow chrysoberyl. During the Victorian and Edwardian eras this yellow chrysoberyl was referred to as chrysolite, that name is no longer used in the gemological nomenclature. Ordinary chrysoberyl is greenish-yellow and transparent to translucent. It is used as a gemstone when the mineral exhibits nice pale green to yellow color and is transparent.
  • The second variety is “cat’s eye” also known as cymophane. Cymophane comes from the Greek words cyma and phanes, which mean “wave” and “appearance”. This variety exhibits beautiful opalescence or chatoyant that reminds one of an eye of a cat. When cut into cabochon, this mineral forms a light-green specimen with a silky bband of light extending across the surface of the stone.
  • The third and perhaps most interesting is alexandrite. A strongly pleochroic (trichroic) gem, will exhibit red, orange-yellow and emerald green colors and tend to change color in artifical light compared to daylight. A strong absorption of light in the blue and yellow portions of the spectrum results in color changing from red to green. Typically, alexandrite has a color of an emerald-green in daylight but exhibit a color of raspberry-red in incandescent light.

Of the three chrysoberyl, alexandrite is the most expensive, followed by cat’s eye and lastly, yellow chrysoberyl.

How Chrysoberyl is Formed

Chrysoberyl was formed as a result of pegmatitic processes. The processes occured at least 250 million years ago. The molten magma was forced by the high pressures and temperatures from the outer layers of the earth’s mantle towards the surface. As the main magma body cooled, water originaly present in low concentrations became more concentrated in the moltenn rock because it could not be incorporated into the crystalization of the localized minerals. Consequently, the remaining portion of these molten magma was water rich. It was also rich in silica and rare elements that still had not solidified. During the final stages of the crystallization, this water-rich magma was expelled. It was then solidified in cracks and crevasses to form a pegmatite.

Iff the pegmatite magma was rich in beryllium, crystals of chrysoberyl and beryl could form, but some chromium would also have had to be present in order for alexandrite to form. Since chromium and beryllium are extremely rare elements in rocks, this is only proces which could have concentrated these unusual elements in environment where crystallization could occur.

The possibility for the crystals to grow quickly was contributed by the high water content of the magma, therefore pegmatite crystals are often quite large and of course for gem specimens this factor is important. Chrysoberyl is always accompanied by quartz. It occurs in mica schists and granite pegmatites and in contact with metamorphic deposits of dolomitic marble. Itt is also recovered from river sands, gravels in alluvial deposits with spinel, corundum, garnet and tourmaline.

It is believed chrysoberyl have special properties:

  • To protect its wearer from dangers.
  • Be able to transform negative energy into positive one.
  • To promote tolerance, peace and harmony.
  • Used as good luck charm in numerous cultures.

Chrysoberyl Cat’s Eyechrysoberyl cat's eye

Chrysoberyl cat’s eye perfectly mimics the ghostly appearance of the eye of a cat caught in a pair of headlights at night. The stone comes in two colors: translucent honey brown and apple green, and is cut into high-domed cabochons. A silken-sheened slit of silvery white glides across the face of the dome whenever the gem is tilted slightly, widening and narrowing like the iris of a cat’s eye.

This eerie effect is caused by tiny, hair-like inclusions reflecting in the light and is known as chatoyancy (chatoyancy comes from the French words: chat for cat, oeil for eye). The inclusions of the stone are aligned parallel to the crystallographic axis and are always cut as cabochons with the fibrous needle-like inclusions running across the narrow part of the stone, this is the only way to display the effect properly. While this characteristic appears in other gems, none has the clarity and impact of cat’s eyes in chrysoberyl. Milk and honey is a term commonly used by gemologists to describe the color of the best cat’s eyes. Chrysoberyl lacking the silky inclusions required to display the cat´s eye effect is usually faceted.

Chrysoberyl cat’s eye is not the only stone which display this chatoyancy, other minerals such as corundum, tourmaline, scapolite, quartz, spinel etc also have this feature. The industry designates these gemstones as ruby cat’s eyes, or quartz cat’s eyes, sapphire cat’s eye etc and only the chrysoberyl gemstone can be refered to as cat’s eye with no other designation. Chrysoberyl that does not show a cat´s eye or a color change is known simply as chrysoberyl.

The value of a chrysoberyl cat’s eye is determined by the sharpness of the eye and the richness and luster of the stone’s color. Some chrysoberyl cat’s eye exhibit what is known as a milk-and-honey effect. When a pen light is aimed at the side of the stone, one half will appear milky white, while the other half remains gold. Chrysoberyl cat’s eye is a favorite stone for men’s rings and cuff links. Cat´s eye material is found as a small percenttage of the overall chrysoberyl production wherever chrysoberyl is found. Cat’s eyes are sometimes irradiated in order to improve color and chatoyancy. One of the best way to clean the gemstone is by using warm soapy water and a soft brush.

Asian origins: Sri Lanka and India.
Astrologically, chrysoberyl cat’s eye is associated with the zodiac signs of Gemini and Leo.

The gemstone alexandrite is a chrysoberyl containing iron, chromium and titanium as impurities. It is the color-changing variety of the mineral chrysoberyl and is one of the rarest gemstone in the world as unique geological conditions were needed for its formation. Alexandrite has the unique property of exhibiting different colors depending on the time of the day. It looks green in daylight and reddish purple in artificial light. The changing color properties is attributed to the presence of chromium.

Stones with a weak change or better are considered as alexandrite, while stones with a faint change are considered as chrysoberyl. The color change is caused by alumunium impurities in the gemstone being displaced by chromium oxide. Alexandrite is scarce because of its requirements for two kinds of minerals (one providing beryllium and aluminium and the other providing chromium oxide) that gives the stone the ability to change colors in different light. At the same time, silica is not present where alexendrite is found. This is critical since silica is the 2nd most common element in the earth’s crust. The color of the gemstone can also shift depending on your viewing angle, this phenomenon is known as pleochroism.

This rare gemstone was discovered on the Czar Alexander’s 16th birthday and named in honor of the future Russian Tsar Alexander II. Alexandrite was the national stone of tsarist Russia as the dual colors of the stone red and green were important colors of imperial Russia. Alexandrite is the birthstone for the month of June. Beside Alexandrite, the other birthstones for June include pearls and moonstone. Alexandrite was considered widely as a symbol of good luck, it is believed to strengthen the intuition of those who wear it. It is also the anniversary gemstone for the 45th and 55th years of marriage.

The beautiful changing color qualities, the rarity of the stone plus a good hardness (8.5 in Mohs scale) make alexandrites one of the most expensive gemstones in the world.

Astrologically, alexandrite is associated with the zodiac signs of Gemini

Russian Chrome Diopside – What Is It? Where Does It Come From?

Russian Chrome Diopside – What Is It? Where Does It Come From?

What is this green gemstone that everyone is calling “Russian Chrome Diopside”! Why are so many people trying to purchase it and for what reason? I’m going to try and explain this wonderful green gem.

Then, in 1988, rumors of a momentous new green gem from Russia started circulating in the trade. Dealers who saw this material when it first surfaced in Europe raved about the resemblance of its color to that of tsavorite and chrome tourmaline and raved as much about its price: only a fraction of these gems. After the wall fell and dealers began exploring the new possibilities for marketing Russian gems, the rush was on. Since then, Chrome diopside has been granted class one export status among Russia’s mineral resources, a ranking that includes Diamond, Emerald, and Alexandrite.

Chrome Diopside Mines are found near kimberlite shafts near the mountains in Siberia. The mining of Chrome Diopsidecan be very tough to do. In sub-zero temperatures, a man’s strength is diminished greatly. That is one reason why it is only mined three months out of the year, July – August.

Chrome Diopside forms in basic and ultrabasic igneous and metamorphic rocks.
Most Chrome Diopside is mined in a remote area in Eastern Siberia known as Inagli, which is in the state of Sakha.  The area is better known for its impressive diamond deposits. In Siberia, there isn’t much green to admire for most of the year. Perhaps in compensation, nature placed rich deposits of a vivid green chrome diopside in this snowy region to delight the eye during the long and hard winter months. This challenging landscape is home to the world’s major deposit of chrome diopside.

Many gem names are taken from the French language – but you’ll notice that the name Chrome Diopside is not nearly as beautiful as some other gem names – however, don’t let that fool you because this gem is incredible. Chrome diopside glows with green. In fact, when its color is less than ideal it tends to be from too much green rather than too little. This is more likely to happen in sizes above two carats: the green can be so dark it can look black.

Chrome Diopside makes an excellent substitute for other green gemstones, mainly Emerald and Tsavorite, as it exhibits a similar color at a fraction of the cost. In fact, Chrome Diopside is the most affordable of all the rich green colored gemstones. Chrome Diopside is not treated. Unlike most other gems, which are heated, irradiated or oiled – there is absolutely NO treatment given to Chrome Diopside.

Chrome Diopside is a beautiful green stone. It is highly refractive which gives it great sparkle (nearly twice the refraction index compared to emerald). It is rare! Diopside is found all over the planet, but the rare top-gem-quality chrome diopside is found in Siberia. In Siberia, it is too cold to mine during the winter, making an extra task of keeping production levels even throughout the year. On the MOHS scale of hardness, it is rated a 6-6.5, and is suitable for jewelry.

It is best to cut the diopside in shapes with rounded corners — such as oval or round. It has two planes, so you have to be extra careful when you facet it. This is also why there is approximately 90% loss on the rough. (So to cut 10 carats of polished Chrome Diopside will require 100 carats of the rough.)

faceted cut with shallow angles is needed to improve both the brilliance and the color of the stone, particularly in larger sizes where the color can appear too dark. Popular cuts for chrome diopside include ovalcushionemerald cut(octagon), and rounds.  Chrome Diopside is also occasionally cut into cabochons. The best shape to cut chrome diopside in is oval, and round. Anything with a rounded edge is easier and provides a better return on the rough. However, due to demands in the jewelry industry, it is cut into all shapes; but remember some may be darker than others.

But chrome diopside in small sizes jumps with vivid, fresh green color and sparkles with brilliance. It is the most affordable gemstone with a pure rich green color. It’s availability makes it the perfect green gem for stud earrings and pendants.

Here is a pair of stud earrings that show a beautiful and rich color of green.

Here is a 1.50 carat chrome diopside gemstone:

Here is a 14 carat chrome diopside in which you will see how much darker it is compared to the 2 carat:

Chrome Diopside is in the pyroxene group of minerals, and has PRISMATIC CLEAVAGE, which means the angles of cleavage are 87 degrees and 93 degrees (almost perpendicular). This makes it a very difficult gem to facet. But at the same time, it has about twice the refraction of an emerald, giving it a brilliant sparkle.

Chrome Diopside being an all natural untreated gemstone with no heat, no radiation, no diffusion and no oils are used. This makes Chrome Diopside the most pure semi-precious gem available.

Mythology of Chrome Diopside

The name Diopside is derived from the Greek word ‘di’ meaning two, and ‘opsis’, meaning vision.

Diopside is believed to be a creative stone, increasing creative visualization and helping to manifest desired goals. It has also been said that it can improve the wearer’s intellect, particularly with regards to mathematical and analytical abilities. In addition to this, Diopside is believed to alleviate aggression and stubbornness, and is said to be related to love, commitment, and the inner heart.

Chrome Diopside is believed to protect the wearer  from all the evil and bad memories. It is even associated with healing of a few chronic diseases.

Physically, Diopside is believed to heal the heart, lungs, and the circulatory system. It is also believed to aid with psychological disorders and weaknesses.

I know this is a lot of information to take in all at once; but I hope this gives you some clarification on this wonderful green gemstone.

Think of it this way:

Consider a garden: bright colors, pastels of the flowers and how beautiful they look against the rich green foliage. Perhaps this is why the rich green of chrome diopside can be worn with anything from casual day wear to elegant evening attire.

Chalcedony ( /kælˈsɛdəni/) is a cryptocrystalline form of silica, composed of very fine intergrowths of quartz and moganite. These are both silica minerals, but they differ in that quartz has a trigonal crystal structure, while moganite is monoclinic. Chalcedony’s standard chemical structure (based on the chemical structure of quartz) is SiO (silicon dioxide).

Chalcedony has a waxy luster, and may be semitransparent or translucent. It can assume a wide range of colors, but those most commonly seen are white to gray, grayish-blue or a shade of brown ranging from pale to nearly black. The color of chalcedony sold commercially is often enhanced by dyeing or heating.

The name chalcedony comes from the Latinchalcedonius (alternatively spelled calchedonius). The name appears in Pliny the Elder‘s Naturalis Historia as a term for a translucid kind of Jaspis. The name is probably derived from the town Chalcedon in Asia Minor. The Greek word khalkedon (χαλκηδών) also appears in the Book of Revelation (Apc 21,19). It is a hapax legomenon found nowhere else, so it is hard to tell whether the precious gemmentioned in the Bible is the same mineral known by this name today.

Rare Morroccanpseudomorph of spiral Turritella-like snail has been replaced by chalcedony

Chalcedony occurs in a wide range of varieties. Many semi-precious gemstones are in fact forms of chalcedony. The more notable varieties of chalcedony are as follows:

Agate is a variety of chalcedony characterized by either transparency or color patterns, such as multi-colored curved or angular banding. Opaque varieties are sometimes referred to as jasper. Fire agate shows iridescent phenomena on a brown background; iris agate shows exceptional iridescence when light (especially pinpointed light) is shone through the stone. Landscape agate is chalcedony with a number of different mineral impurities making the stone resemble landscapes.

Aventurine is a form of quartz, characterised by its translucency and the presence of platy mineralinclusions that give a shimmering or glistening effect termed aventurescence. Chrome-bearing fuchsite (a variety of muscovitemica) is the classic inclusion, and gives a silvery green or blue sheen. Oranges and browns are attributed to hematite or goethite.

Carnelian (also spelled cornelian) is a clear-to-translucent reddish-brown variety of chalcedony. Its hue may vary from a pale orange, to an intense almost-black coloration. Similar to carnelian is sard, which is brown rather than red.

Chrysoprase (also spelled chrysophrase) is a green variety of chalcedony, which has been colored by nickel oxide. (The darker varieties of chrysoprase are also referred to as prase. However, the term prase is also used to describe green quartz, and to a certain extent is a color-descriptor, rather than a rigorously defined mineral variety.)

Blue-colored chalcedony is sometimes referred to as “blue chrysoprase” if the color is sufficiently rich, though it derives its color from the presence of copper and is largely unrelated to nickel-bearing chrysoprase.

Heliotrope, or bloodstone

Heliotrope is a green variety of chalcedony, containing red inclusions of iron oxide that resemble drops of blood, giving heliotrope its alternative name of bloodstone. In a similar variety, the spots are yellow instead, known as plasma.

Moss agate

Tree agate

Moss agate contains green filament-like inclusions, giving it the superficial appearance of moss or blue cheese. There is also tree agate which is similar to moss agate except it is solid white with green filaments whereas moss agate usually has a transparent background, so the “moss” appears in 3D. It is not a true form of agate, as it lacks agate’s defining feature of concentric banding.

Mtorolite is a green variety of chalcedony, which has been colored by chromium. Also known as chrome chalcedony, it is principally found in Zimbabwe.

Onyx is a variant of agate with black and white banding. Similarly, agate with brown, orange, red and white banding is known as sardonyx.

Chalcedony cameo of Titus head, 2nd Century AD

As early as the Bronze Age chalcedony was in use in the Mediterranean region; for example, on MinoanCrete at the Palace of Knossos, chalcedony seals have been recovered dating to circa 1800 BC. People living along the Central Asian trade routes used various forms of chalcedony, including carnelian, to carve intaglios, ring bezels (the upper faceted portion of a gem projecting from the ring setting), and beads that show strong Greco-Roman influence.

Fine examples of first century objects made from chalcedony, possibly Kushan, were found in recent years at Tillya-tepe in north-western Afghanistan. Hot wax would not stick to it so it was often used to make seal impressions. The term chalcedony is derived from the name of the ancient Greek town Chalkedon in Asia Minor, in modern English usually spelled Chalcedon, today the Kadıköy district of Istanbul.

Chalcedony knife, AD 1000-1200

According to tradition, at least three varieties of chalcedony were used in the Jewish High Priest’s Breastplate. (Jewish tradition states that Moses’ brother Aaron wore the Breastplate, with inscribed gems representing the twelve tribes of Israel). The Breastplate supposedly included jasper, chrysoprase and sardonyx, and there is some debate as to whether other agates were also used.

In the 19th century, Idar-Oberstein, Germany, became the world’s largest chalcedony processing center, working mostly on agates. Most of these agates were from Latin America, in particular Brazil. Originally the agate carving industry around Idar and Oberstein was driven by local deposits that were mined in the 15th century. Several factors contributed to the re-emergence of Idar-Oberstein as agate center of the world: ships brought agate nodules back as ballast, thus providing extremely cheap transport. In addition, cheap labor and a superior knowledge of chemistry allowed them to dye the agates in any color with processes that were kept secret. Each mill in Idar Oberstein had four or five grindstones. These were of red sandstone, obtained from Zweibrücken; and two men ordinarily worked together at the same stone.

Chalcedony was once thought to be a fibrous variety of cryptocrystalline quartz. More recently however, it has been shown to also contain a monoclinic polymorph of quartz, known as moganite. The fraction, by mass, of moganite within a typical chalcedony sample may vary from less than 5% to over 20%. The existence of moganite was once regarded as dubious, but it is now officially recognised by the International Mineralogical Association.

Chalcedony is more soluble than quartz under low-temperature conditions, despite the two minerals being chemically identical. This is thought to be because chalcedony is extremely finely grained (cryptocrystalline), and so has a very high surface area to volume ratio.[citation needed] It has also been suggested that the higher solubility is due to the moganite component.

This month we will investigate the mineral CAVANSITE. As mineral species go, cavansite is a relative newcomer, being officially recognized as a mineral species in 1967. The type locality is the Owyhee Dam, Lake Owyhee State Park, Malheur County in Oregon. The host rocks in this area are Miocene volcanics consisting of massive rhyolite and andesite. The cavansite occurs as minute, rather unimpressive, crystals in gas cavities in the volcanic rocks. As this mineral occurrence was rather unimpressive, cavansite was relegated to the status of a mineral curiosity until the early 1970’s when the mineral was discovered in the Deccan trap basalts in the Poona district in India. At this locality, cavansite occurs as well developed spherical aggregates of deep blue crystals associated with large crystals of stilbite in gas cavities in the basalt. This mineral occurrence created a sensation in the mineral collecting world. At mineral shows these days it is not uncommon to see rather awesome large specimens of stilbite festooned with spherical groups of deep blue cavansite from the Poona, India locality. The name of this mineral is derived from its chemical composition of calcium, vanadium and the silicate radical. The deep blue color is a result of the vanadium content. Good micromounts of cavansite from the Poona, India locality are very hard to find. You have to break down some thumbnail size specimens to get at the “Good Stuff”. The “Good Stuff” is relatively open radiating clusters of deep blue transparent crystals that occur in the void areas between large crystals of stilbite. Shown below are some photomicrographs of some of the “Good Stuff” extracted from thumbnail size specimens purchased from dealers at the December GMS show. Magnification is 25X. An interesting aspect that micromounters have is a visual examination of change in the intensity of color as the vanadium content in the mineral varies. Pale blue crystals with deep blue tips are just awesome things to look at. An examination of the recent mineralogical literature indicates that most geologists agree that vanadium in cavansitecomes from the host volcanic rocks. Reports of vanadium content as high as 600 to 750 ppm in the basalts near Poona have been presented by several geologists working in the area. Another interesting observation is the sequence of mineral deposition. Stilbite appears to have been deposited first, followed by cavansite. In some cases a third depositional phase of heulandite or calcite is observed as tiny crystals deposited on crystals of cavansite. All in all, some superb micromounts can be had by having the courage to break down thumbnail size material. I for one will be looking for some good thumbnail size specimens of cavansite at the upcoming spring gem and mineral show. There is a real thrill when you break down a larger specimen and find some of the “Good Stuff”. Until next month, may all your skies be blue and all the vugs you find are crystal filled.

The Healing Energies, Metaphysical Properties, Legendary Uses and Meaning of Carnelian

The Healing Energies, Metaphysical Properties,

Legendary Uses and Meaning

carnelianIntroduction to the Meaning and Uses of Carnelian

Like the unexpected fire of a sunset, or the first flash of autumn brilliance, Carnelian captivates. Its bold energy brings a rush of warmth and joy that lingers, stimulating and empowering. Known as a stone of motivation and endurance, leadership and courage, Carnelians have protected and inspired throughout history.

A glassy, translucent stone, Carnelian is an orange-colored variety of Chalcedony, a mineral of the Quartz family. Its color varies from pale pinkish-orange to a deep rusty brown, though it is most known for its brilliant orange and red-orange crystals. Its name comes from a Latin word meaning “flesh.”

In antiquity, as well as today, Carnelian is believed to help timid speakers become both eloquent and bold. [Simmons, 92] Ancient Warriors wore Carnelian around their neck for courage and physical power to conquer their enemies. In Egypt it was worn by master architects to show their rank of builder, and alchemists of the Middle Ages used it as a boiling stone to activate the energy of other Chalcedonies. As the first stone in the breastplate of the High Priest, it signified the blood of the martyrs [Kunz, 303, 305], and was once believed to prevent illness and the Plague. [Fernie, 138]

The ancient Egyptians called Carnelian “the setting sun.” In its orange hues, they identified it with the receptive or passive female energies, and associated it with the fertile menstrual blood of the mother goddess, Isis. In its red, red-orange to reddish brown shades, they considered it the active male energy stone, recognized by its glowing vibrant color. [Eason, 72, 84] Carnelian is traditionally worn to enhance passion, love, and desire.

usesCarnelian Uses and Purposes – Overview

Orange stones, especially the carnelians, are excellent aids for training, coordination of physical exercise programs, and for balancing body energy levels. Carnelians boost a listless attitude and can stimulate the appetite. [Mella, 125]

Used as a professional support crystal, Carnelian aids architects, builders and construction workers in their creation of master buildings, stimulates power and stamina in athletes and military personnel, establishes form and organization in journalists, and stimulates motivation in salespersons. [Mella, 129-132]

Carnelian is said to attract prosperity, new resources and good luck. It is a talisman for success in any money-making venture. In the workplace, it is a crystal of ambition, drive and determination, and wards off undue pressures of co-workers or impersonal corporations with unrealistic expectations. [Eason, 72]

Carnelian clarifies the voice. It is the Singer’s Stone. [Megemont, 46] It also promotes confidence for performances on stage or in live media. [Eason, 72]

Carnelian is traditionally known to guard against falling masonry and accidents with tools. Today it guards the home from theft, fire, storm or accident. [Eason, 72]

Carnelian lends the courage needed to help overcome difficulties and defend a cause. It promotes idealism, a sense of community and pragmatism. [Gienger, 21]

Orange and red Carnelian are important crystals to use for love, and for the consummation of love. Orange crystals, in particular, are fertility and potency symbols and are linked with conceiving a child. Carnelian of either color may help in rekindling passions that might have faded in an otherwise loving relationship. [Eason, 43]

healing power of crystalsCarnelian Physical Healing Energy

Carnelian is full of the life force, stimulating metabolism and a good supply of blood to the organs and tissues. It influences the reproductive organs of both sexes, and increases fertility, overcoming frigidity and impotence. It aids in menstrual and menopausal symptoms, and may aid in vitro and artificial insemination. [Hall, 95][Eason, 84]

It benefits in the absorption of vitamins, nutrients, and minerals in the small intestine, and improves blood viscosity and circulation. [Gienger, 21] It helps reduce congestion, phlebitis, varicose veins and hemorrhoids, as well as boils and skin irritations. Carnelian accelerates scarification and heals nosebleeds. (However, if these recur, consult a doctor.) [Megemont, 46]

It helps heal lower back problems, rheumatism, arthritis, neuralgia, and accelerates healing in bones and ligaments. It aids the relief of depression, especially in those of advanced years. [Hall, 95][Eason, 72]

It provides excellent support for detoxifying from alcohol or other drugs, breaking bad physical habits, and for improving overall health in general.[Ahsian, 93]

physical healing crystal usesCarnelian Emotional Healing Energy

Carnelian is a stabilizing crystal, perfect for anchoring in the present. Its high energy helps restore lost vitality and motivation, and stimulates creativity for new pursuits. It improves concentration and removes extraneous thoughts in daydreamers, and during meditation. This stone also protects against envy, rage, and resentment – yours, or from others, and encourages a love of life. It is useful for overcoming abuse of any kind, helping you to trust yourself and your perceptions. [Hall, 94-95]

Carnelian alleviates jealousy and possessiveness in relationships, and is helpful in overcoming sexual anxieties, and eating disorders. It is also beneficial with male mid-life crisis. [Eason, 72, 84]

chakra balancing with crystalsCarnelian Chakra Healing and Balancing Energies

Carnelian, in its beautiful shades of orange, stimulates the Sacral Chakra, or Second Chakra, located below the naval and above the pubic bone at the front of the pelvis. It controls the flow of energy and is the center of gravity of the body. It is the center of the Life Force of the body, and controls the flow of information from the body to the mind and from the mind to the body.

Gut feelings, intuition, and other “non-linear” communication comes from this chakra. When it is out of balance the symptoms will manifest themselves as confusion, over dependency on others, repression of feelings, inability to feel joy, fear of sensuality or sex, and frustration. When it is in balance you have grace, feel pleasure in life, find you are flexible and can “go with the flow” and do so in good spirit.

Carnelian, in shades of red, is also a powerful ally in healing Base Chakra blockages and traumas, aiding one in recovering vital information about oneself and one’s purpose on Earth. The Base, or Root Chakra, is located at the base of the spine, and controls the energy for kinesthetic feeling and movement. It is the foundation of physical and spiritual energy for the body. When physically out of balance the symptoms will manifest themselves as lethargy, low levels of activity, low enthusiasm, and a need for constant stimulation. When the Base Chakra is in balance, the physical body regains its strength and stamina, and spiritual energy is rekindled in the form of security and sense of one’s own power. It often leads to independence and spontaneous leadership.

spiritual crystalsCarnelian Spiritual Energy

Carnelian encourages acceptance of the cycle of life and helps remove the fear of death. As an ancient stone, it was used to protect the dead on their journey to the afterlife. It gives courage and promotes positive life choices. [Hall, 94]

Carnelian is a crystal of action, overcoming procrastination or indecision. It encourages one to stop waiting for dreams to appear, and stimulates the courage to embrace change and Divine Will to begin to make one’s highest goals happen. [Ahsian, 93]

Carnelian encourages an awareness of the connection between the emotional state and the inner condition of the self. It promotes a spiritual energy conducive to awakening one’s talents and perceptions of surroundings, and for offering love in return for love. Carnelian in shades of pink-orange, especially encourage love between parents and children, and between parents and parents. [Melody, 183]

Carnelian may be used, with advanced training, to see into the past. It carries the stories and records of our planet, and reflects its light energy back in the color of our physical world. It stimulates a deeper love and appreciation for the beauty and gifts of the earth. [Raphael, 140]

crystal color powerCarnelian Color Energy

Orange Carnelian brings joy and friendship, pleasure, and family togetherness. It is a happy and sharing stone, integrating the parts of our communal lives, bringing things and people together. It is a stone of physical pleasure and intimacy. In lighter shades, Orange Carnelian promotes companionship and affection, while the darker crystals deepen the sense of belonging and home.

Carnelian, in shades of scarlet, combines the energy of the pure red ray, and the exuberance and joy of the orange. It is the color of strength and vitality, both physical and spiritual. Scarlet crystals help overcome fear and improve self-reliance, and are the crystals of victory, success, and skill. Lighter shades of scarlet, the lightly tinted red-oranges, are excellent talismans of dedication in young relationships. They combine the pink energy of romantic love with the light orange energy of contentment with family and friends. Deep scarlet crystals are the key to the physical pleasures of maturity – in love, in life, and in relationships. Muted with brown, deep scarlet Carnelian gives us the natural sources of energy to enjoy life’s pleasures that extend past the joyfulness of youth.

Red Carnelian brings a self-confidence built on fearlessness. It reflects the color of passion, energy, and life. It motivates. It is a very strong color – the color of fire and blood. Dark Red crystals embody strong, deep feelings, durable energy and quiet passion. It is a masculine color, particularly useful for increasing devotion and seeing the seriousness of life.

Carnelian Amulets and Talismans

In ancient Egypt, hieroglyphic texts from the Book of the Dead were engraved on amulets made from Carnelian to procure a safe passage in the afterlife. Early Babylonian cylinder amulets were also made from this stone. [Kunz, 290]

Carnelian was favored in Greek and Roman times for engraving signet rings as amulets. Many bore the figures of Serapis and Isis, signifying Time and Earth, while others were engraved with zodiacal signs as birthstones of the wearer. [Kunz, 124]

Carnelian is a Seeker Transfomer crystal. Seekers contain the crystal energy structure that aligns the natural energy of the crystal to the natural power of the human mind to find the way to new horizons and new capabilities. They’re pointers, directors, and compasses; the fresh start crystals. These are talismans of the scientist, the adventurer, the hunter, wanderer, and explorer. They’re also crystals of the student and the researcher. Transformer crystals enhance efforts to change our situations, prospects, health, outlook or relationships. By transforming ourselves we transform our lives. We learn to dance, speak a new language, grow stronger, or become a better spouse or child. Seeker crystals with the earth power of the Transformer are excellent talismans to aid our efforts to grow, develop new capabilities and change our lives.

It is traditionally associated with the south area of a home or room, and with the fame and reputation area of your dwelling. Use its energy to give your life the boost it needs to enhance your standing in the community and within your family. Red and scarlet Carnelian should be used sparingly, to bring the sun’s power and the fire element’s energy to your space. Use orange Carnelian as an accent and as an accessory in rooms where high energy is needed.

Lore_and _legend of crystalsCarnelian in Ancient Lore and Legend

Roman Carnelian rings, or seals, engraved with deity images or fierce animals were considered both protective and lucky. [Eason, 72]

A man richly dressed with a beautiful object in his hand, engraved on a Carnelian, checked the flow of blood and conferred honors. [Kunz, 133]

A man with a sword in his hand, on a Carnelian, preserved the place where the stone might have been from, from lightning and tempest, and guarded the wearer from vices and enchantments. [Kunz, 133]

In ancient times, Carnelian was believed to give the wearer courage in battle and to help timid speakers become both eloquent and bold.[Simmons, 92]

In ancient Egypt, Carnelian was thought to be the stone of form and design worn by master architects, to show their rank of builder. [Mella, 77] The 29th chapter of the Book of the Dead was engraved on Carnelian, as were many of the body amulets, asking for Isis and other gods to assure safe passage in their afterlife. [Kunz, 229]

Ancient warriors wore Carnelian around their neck for courage and physical power to conquer their enemies. Alchemists of the Middle Ages used it as a boiling stone to activate the energy of other Chalcedonies to transform their energy into useful form. [Mella, 77]

Carnelian is said to be the first stone in the breastplate of the High Priest, engraved with the name Reuben; it also garnished the sixth foundation wall for the New Jerusalem. Its significance, according to the Archbishop of Mainz in the first century, is the venerable blood of the martyrs. [Kunz, 303, 305] Red Carnelian is also associated with St. Bartholomew, signifying his martyrdom. [Fernie, 44]

Carnelian, also called Sardius or Odem, was considered important among the Hebrews and Arabs to prevent illness. The Hebrews believed it kept them from dangers of the Plague, while the Arabs employed it as an agent to stop bleeding. John Schroder wrote in 1669, “It is a gem half transparent, like the water wherein flesh is washed; or like bloody flesh; hence it is called, Carneolus, or Cornelian – genitive flesh.” He declared its powder good to drink against all fluxes, and when carried it made cheerful minds, expelled fear, created courage and protected against all poisons. [Fernie, 138]
