There comes a time when we all need to downsize. We are always afraid to throw something out for fear we will need it. The truth is, if you look at your spring and summer wardrobe, and by fall you have not worn any of it, get rid of it. Same goes for fall and winter, by spring there will be items you never wore the season before. Apparently there was a time when you liked it or you would not have purchased it.
This is another reason to try not to buy “fad” items that look good for the season and then you see that you would never wear it again. If you stick with classic dressing, you simply can’t go wrong.
There are so many places to donate clothing to. For women who are trying to get into the workforce and come from abusive situations, this is a great place to donate clothing, and any accessories you might have.
You might as well go through your accessories while you are doing your clothing. Handbags, shoes, scarves, costume jewelry, any type of accessory you no longer use, consider these items for donation. The other possibility is putting your things online or a resale shop. Resale shops take items according to seasons. They accept clothing for the present season. They also take jewelry, shoes, handbags, etc. They take a percentage of course if the items sell, and give you a time period to get things back that don’t sell or they donate the items. So, there are several options for disposing of items when downsizing.
What gave me the idea for this blog is I ran across a new business in the Cypress area that will come in and organize your closet for you. This is not a new concept but there is nothing like having things organized. The Container store does the same and I think there are some DIY items to get things organized. Anything you are not using and the rule of thumb is if you have not worn it in 6 to 8 months get rid of it. You will be surprised when you do not even miss it.
Another area of the house is the kitchen. Do you use everything in your kitchen or do you have duplicate items and know that you only need one, get rid of what you don’t use. Seems like every kitchen has enough coffee cups for 10 families. How many sets of dishes, mixing bowls, platters, serving bowls, pots, and pans are being used on a consistent basis. Other kitchen items are cute gadgets that are used once and then thrown in a drawer never to see daylight.
I did the downsizing and got rid of an entire set of dinnerware, bowls, cups, glasses, and looked at the rest of the items to make sure this is something that I really use. Again, these are great donation items. I was left with space to put items I really use and not have overcrowded shelves.
Then there is the catch-all drawer, every household has one. Go through this drawer and throw out any and all useless items. Once you go through closets and drawers you will have space to put items you do use.
One of the biggest advantages to this is what you may find while getting organized. You may find old jewelry that you never knew you had and that could turn into money in your pocket. Then all you need to do is bring anything you have made of precious metals to us and we will verify its purity, weigh it and you will have cash in your pocket. This is like going on a treasure hunt, you may have buried treasure and not even know it.
